Essential Oils

Essential Oils & Aromatherapy

What are essential oils?

Essential oils are the healing properties found in plants and are extracted from the plant's cells using a variety of methods. The most popular form of extraction is steam distillation. Essential oils come from different parts of the plant, each part smells differently as well as having a different affect on the body. Essential oils are different from fragrance oils. Fragrance oils are synthetically produced, and while they smell nice, they do not have a healing affect on the body.

Aromatherapy is the use of essential oils to heal our body, minds and our spirit. When used as part of the healing process, essential oils can assist us emotionally by unlocking pleasant memories. Scent enters the body via the olfactory system and is transmitted throughout the body to assist with emotional, physical and spiritual healing.

Aromatherapy is to be used as a complementary therapy and is not meant to replace medical advice but to compliment it.

You can use essential oils for many purposes, try:
  • In your bath (alone, mixed with another oil).
  • As a safe and natural cleaner in your home. Oils can be added to water to clean or as a disinfectant. Try tea tree oil with orange.
  • Burn in an oil burner for scenting your home, for ridding of odors, relaxation or for clearing a stuffy nose. Try nutmeg!
  • Add a few drops to your shampoo. Rosemary is great.
  • Excellent for massage when added to a "carrier oil" such as grapeseed oil or fractionated coconut oil.
  • You can place a few drops on your pillow at night to aid in a good night's sleep. Lavender works wonders.
  • Sprinkle a few drops of your favorite on a tissue for use whenever you need it. This is especially good when fighting a cold or for a "pick me up".
  • Make your own spray for linens or to freshen the air. Grapefruit always smells wonderful!
  • Add few drops to potpourri. Cinnamon and orange are a great combination!
  • Make your own insect repellent in a spray bottle with citronella mixed with witch hazel, or water.
  • Add several drops of your favorite essential oil to your unscented cream or lotion.
